Come Michael Spalt, James Trussart ha seguito un suo personale percorso nel costruire le sue chitarre. Se Michael predilige il legno e gli oggetti trovati ovunque, James predilige il ferro, in particolare quello arrugginito, ossidato, fossilizzato, cui restituisce nuova vita. E’ un musicista diventato liutaio: suonava il violino con il cantautore cajun Zachary Richard. Stabilitosi a Los Angeles, ha cominciato a realizzare i suoi strumenti partendo dalla passione per le chitarre vintage, secondo lui capaci di vivere una vita propria a prescindere da chi le suona. L’impiego di un materiale particolarmente vissuto come il ferro arrugginito fornisce, a suo parere, un carattere del tutto distintivo ai suoi strumenti, capaci di evocare antiche storie. La sua ricerca spazia anche nell’incisione su rame di rose, simboli tribali e del mondo vegetale, per giungere alla particolare fusione tra metallo e pelle di alligatore, che lui ottiene facendo macerare per settimane un sandwich dei due materiali! Potevano quindi lasciare indifferente me? Ecco quindi che nella mia collezione c’è la Steelcaster, dalla forma Telecaster, con il dorso traforato (è una hollow-body, vale a dire cava, e quindi molto leggera nonostante sia in metallo). Più pregiata è la “Antique Copper Roses SteelTop Set Neck”, in mogano e rame antico con rose finemente incise.

Like Michael Spalt, James Trussart has followed a personal approach in building his guitars. Where Michael prefers wood and salvaged items, James works with iron – especially rusty, oxidized, fossilized iron, to which he gives new life. He is a musician turned luthier: he used to play violin with the Cajun singer-songwriter Zachary Richard. Once settled in Los Angeles, he began creating his own instruments out of his passion for vintage guitars, which he believes live their own lives regardless of who plays them. Using “lived-in” materials such as rusty iron provides his instruments with a distinctive character, capable of evoking ancient stories. His research covers a broad range: from engraving roses, tribal symbols and plants on copper, to the peculiar fusion of metal and alligator leather, obtained by soaking the two layered materials for weeks! His guitars mesmerized Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, Joe Walsh, Marc Ribot, and many more… how could I remain indifferent?
Trussart Steelcaster back
Hence, my collection flaunts a Steelcaster, built in the shape of a Telecaster with a perforated back. It is a hollow-body, and therefore very light despite being made of metal. Even more valuable is the “Antique Copper Roses Steel Top Set Neck”, made out of mahogany and antique copper, finely engraved with roses – which I loaned out to my talented musician-slash-veterinarian nephew Marco Baccino.
