Si chiama Pamelina Hovnatanian, ma è universalmente nota come Pamelina H. A dieci anni pubblicò la sua prima illustrazione su Vampirella. Nata nel New Jersey, ha poi scelto Monterey, in California, come luogo di elezione. Ha illustrato e disegnato di tutto: facciate di case, bici e moto, caschi, loghi per musicisti e concerti, tatuaggi, chitarre.
Già, chitarre. Nel 1989 si presentò al Custom Shop della Fender con il suo portfolio, e da allora è nata una costante collaborazione: mentre il master builder lavora alla chitarra, lei procede a realizzare il concept dell’illustrazione, e quando l’idea è definita, se la fa mandare per procedere al lavoro reale sullo strumento.
Venendo all’argomento Guitart di questa settimana, tutto nasce una sera in macchina, mentre con il mio amico-collezionista Franco Malugani, detto Frank, si stava andando a sentire in periferia una band di amici. Frank, che non aveva mai ceduto alle mie insistenze affinchè mi vendesse una rara Stratocaster tutta in alluminio e decorata Harley Davidson, mi dice tra una chiacchiera e l’altra che l’indomani avrebbe messo su e-Bay la sua Stratocaster Plastiform, uno splendido strumento con manico in acero birds-eye, illustrato da Pamelina con una tecnica mista di aerografo e computer design, giocando intorno al logo della Fender. Frank è così: tanto facilmente si innamora, al punto di prendere l’aereo per andare a New York per farsi fare una Pensa Suhr su misura, ma altrettanto facilmente si disinnamora per passare ad altro tipo di appagamento della sua strana libido da collezionista. E’ così, che frequentandola spesso, ho avuto modo di arricchire la mia collezione con pezzi davvero notevoli: la chitarra in questione è oltretutto un pezzo unico. E io me lo tengo stretto: il Master Builder del Fender Custom Shop che l’ha firmata è stato soprannominato il “Master Builder delle Stelle”. Coming to this week’s Guitart, the story begins while driving to a small concert in the suburbs with my friend and collector Franco “Frank” Malugani. I had been pestering him for a long time to sell me a rare aluminum Stratocaster etched with Harley Davidson logos, but he was not giving in. While chatting, he told me that the next day he would sell his Stratocaster Plastiform on eBay. The Plastiform is a wonderful instrument with a neck made of birds-eye maple and illustrated by Pamelina with a mixed airbrush and computer design technique, playing around with the Fender logo.
Frank can be like that: as easily as he falls in love (to the point where he can fly to New York to have a Pensa Surh made to order), he can fall out of it, turning his lustful collector eye to new guitars. By sticking around him, I was therefore able to enrich my collection with several remarkable pieces: the Plastiform is a really unique item, and I intend to hold on to it, also because the Master Builder of this guitar is Todd Krause. Calling Todd the “Builder to the Stars” would be a vast understatement: he has built custom instruments for Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters and Gene Simmons, to name only a few…
